Thailand Women have won the first of what could be three gold medals in cricket by beating Indonesia by 93 runs in the final of the 50-over competition at the SEA Games in Cambodia.
It wasn’t quite as easy as it sounds as Thailand were bowled out for 130 in 35.2 overs even after an opening stand of 43 from Sornnarin Tippoch and Natthakan Chantham.
But their effort with the bat was more than enough for another great day in the field. Chanida Sutthiruang took a wicket first ball and had three wickets inside eight legal balls.
Suleeporn Laomi got the fourth wicket with a run out and Nattaya Boochatham made it 10 for six in the 8th over.
Thipatcha Putthawong took a wicket with her first ball and two wickets came in Onnicha Kamchomphu’s first over to leave Indonesia on 17 for nine.
The last pair more than doubled the score with a stand of 20 but after being made to wait Laomi’s second run out brought Thailand the gold medal.
Two more golds should follow in the T20 and T10 competitions as Thailand Women are a class apart on the cricket field.
