THAILAND U19 WOMEN BEAT HONG KONG, CHINA BY FIVE MATCHES TO NIL IN WOMEN’S T20 CHALLENGE
The Thailand U19 Women’s team have just enjoyed a dominant five-nil series victory over Hong Kong, China with all matches played at TCG in Bangkok from 1st to 6th April. This is a wonderful confidence booster for under-19 team who will be travelling to Hong Kong later in the month to take part in the Asian Qualifier for the next ICC U19 T20 World Cup that will be held in Bangladesh and Nepal.
Thailand started the series on the front foot by bowling out Hong Kong, China in the first match for 71 in 19.3 overs as player of the match Kewarin Saecho took 3 for 9 in her 4 overs before Thanrada Seesawan hit an unbeaten 29 in just 16 balls as Thailand made 73 for 2 in 11.1 overs to win by 8 wickets.
Thailand batted first in the second match and made an impressive total of 164 for 6 in their 20 overs as captain Koranit Suwanchonrathi hit a fine 54* in 34 balls and Tanrada again batted well for 30 in 35 balls. Hong Kong, China could only respond with 71 for 9 as Patcharaporn Sorntha claimed figures of 3 for 9. Thailand won by 93 runs as Koranit was named player of the match.
Thailand’s bowlers were on top again in the third match as Hong Kong, China were restricted to 68 for 8 with Patcharaporn again the best bowler as she took 3 for 9 and Kewarin 2 for 15. Thailand chased their target in just 10.2 overs as Thanrada hit 30* from 40 balls in a total of 71 for 2. Patcharaporn was this time named player of the match as Thailand clinched the series with their third successive victory.
In the fourth match, Hong Kong, China were limited to a total of 74 for 7 in 20 overs as Koranit this time showed her promise with the ball as she took 3 for 8 in her 4 overs and bowled 17 dot balls. Thailand needed only 8.5 overs to race to victory but were thankful for Thanrada’s 30* in 22 balls as they lost five wickets in the chase. Koranit was again named player of the match as Thailand won by five wickets to take a 4-0 lead in the series.
The fifth and final match was the most competitive contest of the series as Thailand could only make 89 for 8 in their 20 overs. Koranit was again the player who took her side to that modest total as she batted through to the last over of the innings to make 38 from 37 balls to show she could work hard for runs if the going got tough.
Showing her all-round skills Koranit was also the best bowler as she took 3 for 8 in 3 overs and Hong Kong, China looked on their way to another heavy defeat as they collapsed to 29 for 9 in 9 overs. Remarkably the last pair batted out the rest of the innings but the visitors still fell 16 runs short as they finished on 73 for 9.
Thailand U19s had completed a fantastic series victory by winning all five matches with every member of the team gaining valuable match experience for when they travel to Hong Kong for the Asia Qualifier. Several of the players should be names to watch out for in the future when they represent the senior Thailand team.
Thanrada Seesawan was the leading run-scorer in the series with 125 runs at an average of 62.50 and Patacharaporn Sorntha was the leading wicket-taker with nine wickets for 59. It was captain Koranit Suwanchonrati who really caught the eye as she scored 97 runs at 48.50 as well as taking seven wickets for 40 runs on her way to three player of the match awards.
The Thailand U19 women’s team will be heading to Hong Kong after Songkran with great confidence that they can win the Asia Qualifier and reach the U19 World Cup for the first time.
