THAILAND BEAT ZIMBABWE BY ONE RUN
T
here was a thrilling finish in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Kathmandu as Thailand held on to beat Zimbabwe by just one run.
Thailand looked to have made an under-par total despite fifty from Nannapat Khoncharoenkai as they reached 115 for 7 in their 20 overs.
Zimbabwe were steady in the first 10 overs to reach 42 for 2 but took control as 27 came in the next two overs.
Thailand’s spinners bowled tidily but Zimbabwe were well on the way to victory.
They suddenly lost two wickets to left-arm spinner Thipatcha Putthawong who bowled a fantastic 17th over but a boundary off the last ball of the 19th over seemed to be a crucial blow.
Nine runs were needed off the last over. Thailand remained calm in the field as bowler Phannita Maya held her nerve. Two runs were needed from the last ball and Phannita bowled full and straight and she delivered the match-winning run out herself as Thailand gained victory by one run.
Two wins out of two mean that Thailand are at the top of Group B but Zimbabwe have now suffered two defeats.
